Hi, I'm Tyler Perkins
I’m a professional voice actor and audiobook narrator — and the guy behind The Gearhead Voice.
Before I stepped behind the microphone professionally, I spent more than a decade teaching automotive and diesel technology. I’ve taught people to repair vehicles, coached new motorcycle riders, developed technical learning content, and announced basketball and football.
Different audiences. Different subjects. Same challenge:
Understand what you’re talking about, connect with the person listening, and make them want to keep listening.
That experience still shapes every performance I give today.
From the Classroom to the Recording Booth
Long before voice over became my profession, using my voice was already part of my job.
As an automotive instructor, simply knowing the answer wasn’t enough. I had to take complicated systems and make them understandable. More importantly, I had to find the part of the subject that made a student lean forward and actually care.
Motorcycle instruction required something different — calm, clear communication when the person listening needed to trust the direction I was giving them.
Live sports announcing taught me energy, timing, presence, and how to communicate with a room.
Voice acting brought all of those skills together.
Today I use them to tell stories, represent brands, teach audiences, explain complicated ideas, and bring words off the page.
Why The Gearhead Voice?
The name goes back to my years teaching automotive technology.
The student clubs I led were called the Gearheads.
But being a Gearhead was never just about cars. It meant curiosity. Problem-solving. Learning how things work. Developing a skill. Getting your hands dirty and figuring things out when the answer wasn’t obvious.
That mindset never left me.
Today, The Gearhead Voice represents the same idea. I want to understand what I’m performing — whether it’s a commercial, a training course, an automotive procedure, a memoir, or a character trying to survive on another planet.
Because the better I understand it, the more naturally I can communicate it.
And yes, if a character’s car starts making a weird noise, there’s still a decent chance I know what it is.
More Than a Technical Voice
My technical background gives me a specialty.
It doesn’t put me in a box.
Behind the microphone, I’ve worked with everything from technical training and commercial copy to fiction and nonfiction, memoir, biography, self-help, thriller, science fiction, horror, and character-driven stories.
Give me gears, ghosts, spaceships, a product launch, a training course, or someone’s life story, and I’m interested in finding the voice that makes it connect.
That might mean warm and conversational. Confident and authoritative. Energetic and promotional. Grounded and intimate. Or stepping out of the way and simply letting a great story speak.
The goal isn’t to make every project sound like me. It’s to find the version of my voice that serves the project.
Outside the Booth
I’m still very much a gearhead.
Motorcycles and machines have been part of my life for years, and I’m happiest when there’s something to ride, repair, build, learn, cook, play, or figure out.
But the people in my life matter more than the machines.
When I’m not behind the microphone, you’ll usually find me spending time with my wife, Tiffany, and our kids, Corbin and Chloe — getting out on the motorcycle, working on some project I probably convinced myself would be simple, cooking something new, gaming, or finding another excuse to learn how something works.
That curiosity is probably the thread running through all of it.
I like understanding things.
I like creating things.
And I like telling stories about them.
